Crowns
As we age, our teeth begin to change and become more prone to decay around old fillings. Your smile may change due to bruxism (teeth grinding), cracked fillings, root canals, tooth yellowing or tooth loss. If a tooth is beyond repairing with a filling material, Dr. Williams may recommend that the best viable option to save the tooth is a full crown. A crown on a damaged tooth provides durability, natural appearance, and chewing function.
Types of Crowns
There are three types of crowns: (i) a full porcelain crown, (ii) porcelain fused to metal or gold crown, or (iii) a full gold crown. Dr. Williams will recommend which crown material is the most appropriate for your dental health. Your new crown will be virtually unnoticeable, comfortable and will allow you to chew naturally.
Procedure
The majority of crowns are completed in 2 visits, although a 3rd visit may be necessary to ensure a comfortable fit.
The treatment begins with the removal of all decay in the tooth. Once Dr. Williams has removed the decay, we will take an impression of the tooth. Your impression is then sent to our lab where your new crown will be crafted. During this time, we will provide you with a temporary restoration which will resemble your natural teeth.
During your second appointment, Dr. Williams will place your crown to fit comfortably in your mouth and feel like one of your natural teeth. The final step is to cement the crown in your mouth, leaving you with a beautifully restored smile.
