Inlays/Onlays
Inlays and onlays are sometimes referred to as partial crowns which are utilized when there is enough healthy tooth enamel. An inlay or onlay is like a puzzle piece that is fitted into the remaining portion of the tooth to help increase its strength. This piece is usually crafted out of porcelain or gold, but can be made of a composite tooth-colored material.
An inlay is used when the cusps of your tooth are healthy. An inlay is cemented within these cusps. An onlay is used when the damage to the tooth structure is more extensive and the onlay is shaped to cover one or more cusp. Dr. Williams will recommend which restoration is best for you.
Procedure
An inlay or onlay will require two appointments and perhaps a third appointment to ensure a proper fit.
The procedure begins with the removal of all decay in the tooth. Dr. Williams will then take an impression of the tooth. The impression will be sent to our lab where your new restoration will be crafted. During this time, we will provide you with a temporary restoration which will resemble your natural tooth.
During your second visit to the office, Dr. Williams will proceed with the placement of your final restoration. The inlay or onlay will be fitted to ensure that it feels like one of your natural teeth. The final step is to cement the inlay or onlay on to your tooth.
