Root Canal (Endodontics)
A root canal, or endodontics, is the process of removing the nerves from the roots of a tooth. A root canal is often necessary to save an infected tooth. If an infected tooth is not treated, an abscess can form. An abscess can be detected on an x-ray as a dark spot below the apex of the root which is actually bone loss. It is very important to diagnose and treat this problem before your tooth deteriorates and causes pain and bone loss.
Process
The first step of a root canal is to anesthetize the affected tooth. The next step is to drill a small opening through the top of the tooth. Dr. Williams will then determine the length of each root canal. Each canal is cleaned and filled with an inert material called gutta percha. The root canals are then sealed. The tooth is now ready for a restoration, which is usually a crown. A root canal is often completed in two visits.
Why do I need a root canal?
A tooth may need a root canal due to a deep cavity that extends into the nerve, a trauma to the tooth that exposes the nerve, a crack in the tooth from a fall or hit in the mouth, or a crack that extends into the nerve of the tooth.
